Social studies is an exciting field that offers students infinite ways to engage with viewpoints and experiences spanning time and space. As a teacher of social studies, I believe in empowering students to think critically and broadly across history, geography, political science, civics, and economics, as well as other subjects, in order to construct meaning about their own identities and roles in this beautiful and ever-changing world. Using inquiry-based practices, my classes emphasize critical verbal and written expression; in addition to growth in historical thought and writing, my students also cultivate essential skills in empathy, ethics, and responsibility. By valuing student input and prior knowledge, and practicing culturally-relevant pedagogy, my classes are founded on the primary goal of helping students construct their own knowledge, put it into context, and strengthen their understanding of themselves and their world today.
"Sarah is an amazing teacher! She draws from us (her students) in a way I really enjoy. She teaches the class with a flow and method that really works for everyone in the class. If somebody is having a harder time she makes sure that the person in question understands the subject. Sarah is a fantastic teacher and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with her." |
"Went above and beyond to teach the material and more. Great use of examples and resources from the times taught about. Learning a lot!"
I believe in the fundamental importance of establishing a classroom culture of good humor, deep care, warmth, and positive regard, and in the power of restorative discipline to address behavior problems. The process of creating this culture begins at the start of the year, with student input driving the establishment of classroom norms and values. Out of this community-owned set of beliefs stems a collective commitment to empathy, responsibility, and accountability. When disciplinary problems do arise, I empower the student(s) to hold themselves accountable for their obligations as a member of a class community, emphasizing relationships, while also giving them a voice in moving forward. An effective, transformative teacher considers social-emotional learning and whole-child growth, not simply academic achievement or the cut-and-dry enforcement of rules.

Teaching students at radically different academic and developmental levels can be a challenge sometimes, but it’s essential as a teacher to ensure growth for every student and establish a classroom culture of academic equity. I differentiate my classes and assignments by time, by text, and by the amount of supports offered, so that all students, including those who are struggling and those who are advanced, have a meaningful educational experience. Differentiation in my mind also means providing a variety of flavors of tasks, assessments, activities, and forms of participation, taking into account the fact that, as individuals, students have different strengths in the way they learn and express themselves best. Above all else, I appreciate the importance of forging strong, collaborative relationships with other staff in the building, such as teacher consultants, who can offer essential insight and feedback into how to best serve the needs of all students.
"Sarah comes into class and isn't afraid to talk to students. Her lectures are all interesting. There is a lot of information and connections into today's world. She is always positive and if she is asked a question, she always has an answer."
